ABOUT — WATER REQUIREMENT CALCULATOR BY RANCHASSIST™
Water planning is a capacity problem, not just a gallons-per-head problem.
The RanchAssist™ Water Requirement Calculator was created to help ranchers, livestock managers, landowners, and agricultural operators organize the main variables that shape a livestock water plan: herd demand, hot-weather demand, concentrated drinking periods, trough capacity, stored reserve, source flow, and recovery time.
WHAT THE CALCULATOR DOES
The calculator lets you build one or more livestock groups and enter an editable gallons-per-head-per-day assumption for each group. It then combines those group inputs with user-controlled planning conditions, including typical temperature, hot-weather planning temperature, forage condition, salt/feed adjustment, lactation adjustment, planning safety factor, emergency reserve duration, and peak drinking window.
From those inputs, RanchAssist estimates:
- Base livestock water demand
- Normal condition-adjusted daily demand
- Peak hot-weather daily demand
- Hourly peak planning demand
- Required emergency reserve storage
- Combined trough capacity
- Total on-site capacity, including storage tanks
- Gallons of stored water available per head
- Capacity surplus or deficit versus the selected reserve target
- Full refill time from the entered source flow
- Minimum source GPM needed to recover one peak-day demand volume within the selected recovery period
An optional Advanced water-point mode can divide total herd demand among multiple troughs or sources. Each point can have its own herd allocation, trough capacity, and source flow for a more localized capacity comparison.
WHY RANCHASSIST BUILT IT THIS WAY
A single daily-demand number can hide important constraints. A system can have adequate total storage and still struggle during concentrated drinking periods. A large trough can still recover too slowly. A strong source can still need stored water to bridge peak-hour draw. A system that works under typical conditions may need a different margin under a hotter planning case.
The Water Requirement Calculator keeps those questions visible instead of collapsing them into one number.
TRANSPARENT ASSUMPTIONS
RanchAssist treats livestock water inputs as planning assumptions, not universal recommendations. The calculator includes editable example values for common livestock classes, but the user remains responsible for choosing the assumptions appropriate to the animals, location, season, water source, and operating conditions being planned.
Calculation Details shows the formulas used so the estimate can be reviewed and audited.
SESSION-FIRST BY DESIGN
The Water Requirement Calculator does not require a RanchAssist account and does not use a RanchAssist-hosted project database for normal standalone project data.
Active work may be stored in browser sessionStorage to protect the current session from accidental refresh or same-tab navigation. For longer-term saving, the complete editable project can be exported as a RanchAssist .ra project file and opened again later.
Project saving is intentionally separate from reporting. Users can also export CSV, create a PDF through the print workflow, print a report, copy a text summary, or share a summary by email.
A PRACTICAL PLANNING TOOL
RanchAssist is designed to feel like modern field-operations software: precise, calm, usable on a phone, tablet, or desktop, and transparent about the assumptions behind the answer.
The Water Requirement Calculator is a planning aid. It does not certify animal-welfare, plumbing, pump, well, storage, or engineering compliance. Actual water needs and system performance vary with livestock, weather, water quality, travel distance, shade, feed, health, source reliability, equipment, and site conditions. Local professional guidance should govern real-world decisions where appropriate.
